Cocoa Tree
Cocoa trees, scientifically known as “Theobroma cacao”, is a small evergreen tree that thrives in the hot, damp, and still air of tropical climates, such as those in South America, Africa, and parts of South Asia. Naturally, they grow as undergrowth in forests among vines, palms, and other trees, or along rivers.
Our Cocoa Butter comes from West Africa, where cocoa production is a major economic backbone. Most cocoa is harvested from planted farms, often intercropped with other plants to shield the cacao trees from extreme conditions. The trees typically grows to a height of about 4 to 8 meters, though in the wild it can reach up to 15 meters.
Cultivation & yield
The cocoa tree bears its treasure in the form of pods. These pods, ranging from 15 to 30 cm in length, encapsulate 20 to 50 seeds known as cocoa beans. They are the essence of chocolate, coveted for their rich flavor and versatility in culinary creations.
Pods take approximately 5 to 6 months to ripen, undergoing a metamorphosis of color. With skilled hands farmers carefully gather the pods and it begins with meticulous extraction, followed by fermentation to enhance flavor. After drying and roasting, the beans are ready for the transformation into cocoa butter. This process involves grinding the beans into a mass, pressing out the rich cocoa butter, and refining it into its golden form. The result is a velvety substance prized for its myriad uses, from chocolate production to skincare.
