Origin of Shea Butter
Shea Butter is obtained from the crushed kernels (seeds) of the up to 10 -20m high shea nut tree which grows wild in West Africa. The shea tree has not yet been cultivated on plantations, as it is only fertile after about 25 years. A shea tree can live for over 200 years and is part of the natural environment in the West African bush.
Shea butter has been a staple in African skincare and culinary traditions for centuries, prized for its moisturizing and nourishing properties.
Cultivation & yield
The shea season kicks off during the rainy season spanning from May to April. In the Sahel zone, approximately 10 million female collectors depend on the shea harvest for their livelihoods. Shea fruits are predominantly gathered in the wild by women in rural areas. Traditionally, the harvest season commences with a festival celebrating the abundance of shea fruits.
The process of extracting Shea Butter involves crushing and boiling the nuts (oil content 34-57%), followed by manual extraction and purification to yield the rich, creamy butter that is widely used in cosmetics and skincare products.
