Mango tree and fruit
The mango tree (Mangifera indica) is a symbol of beauty and bounty, thriving in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. These large, evergreen trees can grow up to 30 meters tall, with a dense, rounded canopy that provides ample shade. Known for their resilience, mango trees have deep roots and can often live for over a century.
In just six years, a mango tree can grow up to six meters high, eventually reaching heights of over 30 meters. The main flowering period is between December and March, when the tree is adorned with small, pale yellow to reddish flowers. A single large mango tree can bear up to 10,000 blossoms, but only about 1% are fertilized, resulting in approximately 40 fruits per tree. These fruits ripen three to six months after flowering, weighing up to 2 kilograms. Each fruit contains a large seed rich in fatty oil, used to produce mango butter, also known as mango kernel oil or mango kernel fat.
Mango trees are relatively undemanding, except for sandy soils, and can bear fruit for more than 300 years. Cultivating mangoes involves a blend of traditional knowledge and modern agricultural practices. These trees thrive in well-drained soil and warm, tropical climates with distinct dry seasons. Sustainable farming practices are essential to maintain the health of the trees and the quality of the fruit, supporting both local economies and the environment.
